This video contains clips of people of all ages that are being prompted to answer a question. What would the world be like without teachers? I was drawn to this video because I wanted to know if people would respond to this question positively or negatively. To my surprise, everyone answered that a world without teachers would be a world of chaos. Some of the youngest people in the video responded that it would be sad, because they wouldn't be able to learn. One man answered that the younger generation wouldn't have anyone to look up to or to learn from.
These responses took me by surprise because teachers get such a bad reputation these days. However, when I look back on my teachers like these people did, I feel the exact same way as them. Besides our parents and our family members, teachers are pretty much the first adult role models we come into contact with as a child. We wanted to impress them, and to make them proud of us. Our teachers taught us the difference between right and wrong. They made us apologize to our fellow students when we did something wrong. They taught us that hard work makes all the difference.
As I grew older, the way I viewed my teachers changed. They were no longer the coolest people in the world, but just the person talking at the front of the classroom. However, they never became less important in my life. They still pushed me to put in the hard work, to study when I didn't want to, and to believe that I really could pass that test. Going to a small, private school, my teachers saw me grow out of my awkward phases and my braces, and they never stopped believing that I could grow into a successful young woman.
In high school it wasn't the "cool thing to do" to be close with your teachers, but even behind the scenes they were molding us into educated young men and women. I think that is why I chose to be a teacher. I'm so passionate about the written word. I want to share my passion for English with my students. I don't want to be someone who talks at the class. I want them to ask questions, experience new things, fall in love with a book, take chances, and do their best. Even if they're too old and too cool to admit that they like a teacher, I hope that one day they can look back and know that in some way I touched their life. And if that's true, then it will all be worth it. I know I wouldn't be the same person I am without my teachers, so if I was asked what the world with be with without teachers, I would answer this; A world without teachers would be missing something vital.
