My Connection to the Blog Team
By:Jessica Lusky
On our about us page, it states that we are a group of six freshman at Michigan State University who all have majors relating to education. I am a Human Development and Family Studies major and I thought it would be beneficial to explain what exactly that means and how it can relate to education. The major focuses on studying the ways in which individuals develop within a family and societal context. This can mean physically, emotionally, intellectually, and/or through many other aspects.
The term education can be defined on google as “a body of knowledge acquired while being educated”(Google Search). With that definition in mind, it makes the connection between Human Development and Family Studies and Education easier to understand. The major sets students up for a very wide range of career opportunities, many relating to a specific type of therapy. Lets think about family therapy for a second. If a family is struggling severely with any aspect of their household they may choose to see a therapist. The information the therapist gives them regardless of the form it comes across in, is contributing to their general education. If the therapist words the information in the form of advice or statistics for example, there is knowledge being acquired by the family receiving it. Although they are not being taught by a teacher with an education degree, they are still acquiring knowledge which fits the definition of education.
Although this is not quite what I wish to do in the future, I still study many things that relate to education while pursuing my undergraduate degree. Ideally, I would like to take this knowledge and further my education by attending a two year graduate program abroad. I plan to focus on mediation and applied conflict studies so I am able to utilize the family law aspect of my major and become a family law mediator. According to the the google definition I found, this can still be slightly linked to education. Although family law mediators serve as an unbiased source, I will still share facts and regulations that are contributing to my clients education.
